Improvements to Collections

Collections are now improved notably. Time to do a backflip or two. :-)

Collection improvements
  • Vastly Improved Collection Thumbnails: The thumbnail for collections are now more attractive and have more space for the text. Just take a peek.
  • Paging for collections: When viewing collections that are large, you can now view one page at a time with ease, in the same way that search results are viewed. You can view collections in both "icon view" and in "normal view".
  • Removing items from collections: You can now delete items from your own collections. When you're viewing a collection that you've made, you can now drag and drop items to the upper right corner and place them in the trash can to remove them from your collection.
Other improvements
  • Improved header: The information in the header is now styled in a more friendly and intuitive way. It's more apparent how to see images in "Normal" view.
  • Featured collections: The Featured Collections Page is now made up of collection thumbnails, and shows some of the most interesting and fun collections in the system. A link to it is featured in the upper right corner of the search page.
  • LOTS of important tweaks: As always, there are oodles of small things we fix, that you may not realize. Log into flickr, choose an image that you've created, and then use the bookmarklet to import the image into creative.ly . Creative.ly will know that you made the image, and will list the image in the "your creations" collection. Cool, don't ya think!

The Power of Random

  • Random goodness: There is now a page of Random thumbnails. Why random? Because random is actually interesting. Try it out.
  • Nine thumbnails: To the right of each image, there are now nine thumbnails. This makes for more visual candy to click on.
  • Cleanup on the collections: The page for searching through the collections had a glitch or two that we fixed.

New features - Popular collections, more images, and more

  • Most popular collections: There's now a way to see popular collections.
  • More images: There are more images to play with. Searches return quite fun results sometimes.
  • Larger page tag cloud page: The tags now fills up the page more nicely.
  • Improved collection search: A cleaner list of collections is returned from this search now. There's a bit more we will do to make the collection search cleaner yet. Stay tuned.
  • A bunch of little improvements: Simplified the initial explanatory graphic, the header, the about page, the help page, and the "Add Images" menu. Improved the Facebook "fan us" icon. Renamed a few things to make them more intuitive.

New features - More Fun!

  • Most Popular: There is now a "Most Popular" option in the upper left menu.
This offers especially fun ways to find the images and people you'll enjoy the most.
  • Easier to find fun collections: Made it so the search for collections only shows collections people made manually, and images made by the person who imported them. Make a new yummy collection, and see it at the top of the list!
  • Facebook, twitter, blogger buttons: We are still figuring out the best place to put these, and the best look for them. But there are now buttons to make these easier to find.
  • Lots of cleanup: Not too worth mentioning the fine details, but a lot of little things continue to be cleaned up. Nicer error and info messages, bigger "Previous/Next" links, It no longer lists an external profile if the user has none, and more.
  • Flickr image source change: Rather than hosting the larger sized images ourselves, we just use the images that are already on Flickr. This makes very little difference to the the folks browsing. So why did we change this? A Flickr photographer pointed out why it would be better for most flickr photographers if we made this change, since this gives more control to the photographers.
  • Lots of behind the scenes improvements: Making sure that the site will be stable and can scale as fast as is needed. And an elegant admin tool to help manage the site better.

Recent improvements on creative.ly

We geek like mad, and it bears fruit. Behold, a mountain of scrumptious improvements.
  • Collections
    • Favorites, Imports, and Created: Each user has three collections.
      • Favorites: Items no longer go into your favorites collection automatically. You have to explicitly put something in your favorites collection for it to go there. To add something to your favorites collection, either drag and drop it, or click on the "Collect to Favorites" link to the upper right of any item being viewed large.
      • Imports: When you import an image, it does not automatically go into your favorites collection anymore. Instead, it goes into your imports collection.
      • Created: When you import an image that you created, check the "I created this" checkbox, and it will show up in this collection.
    • Viewing all of your collections: This is not new, but to view all of any user's collections, click on that user. Or to view your own, click on "My Media"

  • Started Creative.ly contest: Make a picture that says "creative.ly". click here.

    • Expect more! There will be more tools coming to help creators manage creations.
  • Browse or search by Image, Collection, or Person: At the top of the home page or search page, you can now specify image, collection, or person.
